Volunteer Story Celebration 2025 - Ōtaki Bike Space Volunteers

Our wonderful group of volunteers from the Energise Ōtaki Bike Space meet approximately every six weeks for our community bike repair sessions. During our bike fix sessions, we repair and repurpose donated bikes, strip bikes for parts, and then recycle the bikes that are no longer usable. Bikes fixed throughout the year are stored and given away for a koha at one of our giveaway sessions. Our volunteers also give their time to help during our community repair day when people can bring their own bikes to be fixed.

We are really lucky to have a committed group of volunteers who turn up to every session. A supportive group that encourages and welcomes newcomers, they are happy to pass on their fixing skills to others. Through the groups mahi, many in our community now have transport, which many would not have had without access to the project. Bikes that are no longer usable are stripped and recycled, a win for the environment.

Interesting fact for cycling - Biking (not driving) local trips of just 2-3km can cut Ōtaki's transport emissions by 40%
Interesting fact for this group - everyone involved with Ōtaki Bike Space also volunteers for other organisations!

If you like the sound of this team's mahi and want to help coordinated this awesome group of volunteers, they are currently looking for an Ōtaki Bike Space Volunteer Coordinator. Check out the role here
