Emergency Volunteering

Emergency Volunteering

In an emergency local volunteers form an essential service. All sorts of skills are needed from labouring, coordination and care/welfare tasks.

To help ensure we are prepared before an emergency happens, Volunteer Kāpiti maintains a database of people who are happy to be contacted for assistance in the event of an emergency.

Would you like to help out? Here's how it works:

  • Complete the registration with your contact details and skills that you have to offer (you must be 18+ and live in the Ōtaki/Kāpiti region). If you do not feel you have any specific skills, don’t worry! In an emergency there are often general volunteer requests as well.
  • Depending on the situation, you may be contacted and asked if you can volunteer. Of course, you can decline if you are unable to assist at that time.
  • Your details may be made available to Civil Defence/Emergency Management or the relevant lead agency for the purpose of emergency volunteering.
  • You can change your details or opt out at any time.

In a large disaster another way you can help locally is by going to your closest Community Emergency Hub. You do not need to register to participate. Community Emergency Hubs are a place where you and your neighbours can go to help each other in a major emergency. More about Hubs here
