Native Tree Nursery Assistants

Support local ecosystems and environmental restoration efforts along the Waikanae river at our nursery in Otaraua Park. Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai are actively involved in this Waikanae Ki Uta project, coordinating activities at the native tree nursery in Otaraua Park (near Otaihanga). We are looking for Nursery Assistants to join their team and support their kaupapa of propagating native plants for planting along the river. Community involvement is key in the nursery's long term success and volunteers with any level of experience are welcome to apply.
Tasks include:

  • Plant Propagation: preparing and sowing seeds or cuttings from native plants, monitoring germination
  • Plant Care: watering, fertilising, pruning and weeding. Pest and disease monitoring. Transplanting seedlings into larger pots.
  • Seed collecting and seed processing. There may be days that require us to go out and do some seed collection.
  • Nursery Maintenance: keeping work areas clean and organised.

Our volunteers often become advocates for nature in the community, spreading awareness about native plants and ecological restoration. Working together as a team will build connections between people of all ages and backgrounds, creating a sense of shared purpose.
