The Volunteer Day Unit Cook is responsible for the planning, preparation and provision of a light lunch and dessert for approx. 8-12 patients attending the Tuesday Day Unit at the Kāpiti Community Base. Meal planning and preparation:
Plan and prepare a light meal and dessert for approximately 8-12 patients
Communicate with Day Unit Coordinator in regards to patients’ special needs and dietary requirements
Delegate to Volunteer Kitchen Assistant to ensure tasks are performed efficiently and in a timely manner
Where possible, have a discussion with the Volunteer Kitchen Assistant for input of ideas
Prepare a shopping list for meal ingredients and purchase prior to the day (or delegate to the Kitchen Assistant when necessary)
Serve meal to patients
Clear up after meal service and ensure kitchen and dining area is clean and tidy
Plan and prepare meals for seasonal celebrations
Experience in meal preparation (either as a professional or as home-cook catering for large numbers)
Excellent planning and organisational skills
Have a strong understanding of food-handling and workplace hygiene
Ability to adjust menus to meet specific dietary requirements (i.e. vegan/soft foods)
A proven ability to plan and organise meals within a budget
Ability to work within a small team and delegate appropriately
Be caring and understanding of work environment
Acts with integrity and respects patient and family confidentiality
Fortnightly or monthly shifts on Tuesdays only.
10am - 2pm + 1.5 hrs planning & shopping prior to shift
