Volunteer Story Celebration 2025 - SeniorNet Kāpiti

17 June 2025 | Volunteer Stories

Our dedicated team of tutors at SeniorNet Kāpiti give freely of their time, not only in running our courses and workshops, but also in keeping up to date in the rapidly evolving world of technology and producing new material to assist our members with the latest developments.
We would like to take this opportunity during National Volunteer Week to celebrate the contribution of one of our long-serving tutors, Patrick Stephens. This is Patrick's story:

For over two decades, I have been tutoring seniors in computer technology, digital cameras, mobile phones, smartphone photography, and conducting various workshops. What began as a small initiative to assist seniors in navigating the digital world and has provided numerous learning experiences and success stories, highlighting the resilience and curiosity of older learners.

The Beginning
My journey started 22 years ago, when I retired as a senior technician in the office machine business. I was introduced to SeniorNet at a Coastlands display where I recognized that some of my experience could be put to good use and helpful to the growing need for seniors to understand and use modern technology. At a time when technology was rapidly advancing, many seniors found themselves feeling left behind, struggling to keep up with basic computer skills and the ever-evolving world of mobile phones.

Understanding the Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was overcoming the fear that many seniors had towards technology. Many of my students believed they were "too old" to learn, a myth I was determined to dispel. Through patience, clear explanations, and plenty of encouragement, I helped them build confidence and embrace learning. Adapting Teaching Methods Teaching seniors required a unique approach. I focused on simplifying complex concepts, using clear, jargon-free language, and demonstrating each step. Hands-on practice was essential, and I encouraged my students to ask questions, no matter how basic they seemed.

Highlights and Success Stories
Over the years, I have witnessed remarkable transformations. Seniors who once struggled to turn on a computer now confidently use email, social media, and online services. Others have developed a passion for smartphone photography, capturing and sharing precious moments with loved ones.

Lessons Learned
My experience has taught me that learning is a lifelong journey, and age is never a barrier. Patience, empathy, and clear communication are key to effective teaching. I have also learned the importance of adapting to each student’s pace and needs. The Future As technology continues to evolve, I remain committed to helping seniors navigate the digital world. My goal is to continue empowering them to stay connected, informed, and creatively engaged.

Conclusion
Looking back on my 22-year journey, I am filled with pride and gratitude. Tutoring seniors in technology has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I look forward to many more years of learning and teaching. Patrick Stephens - May 2025
