We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Volunteer Kapa Haka Kaiako (Tutor) to lead regular kapa haka sessions at The Shed Project. This role supports cultural learning and whakawhanaungatanga in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The tutor will guide participants through waiata, haka, poi, and basic tikanga, supporting both beginners and those with some experience.
Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging kapa haka sessions appropriate to participants’ abilities
  • Teach waiata, haka, poi, and actions with clear explanation and encouragement
  • Share tikanga and cultural context in a respectful and accessible way
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
  • Support group participation and confidence-building
Requirements:
  • Experience in kapa haka (teaching experience is an advantage but not essential)
  • Understanding of tikanga Māori and cultural protocols
  • Ability to teach in a patient, encouraging, and inclusive manner
  • Strong communication skills
  • A passion for sharing culture and supporting community wellbeing

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

2 hours per week, the day and time can be flexible for the right volunteer (during The Shed's Project's opening hours of Monday to Thursday 9am to 4pm)
