Disaster Welfare Support Team Member

Help people prepare for disasters and to get through when an emergency or disaster happens. Disaster welfare and support teams are made up of highly committed, multi-skilled emergency service volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds. You will be delivering essential services to affected communities during and immediately following a disaster. You may be the friendly face at the Civil Defence centre, looking after people and families, or you could be out in the field, mucking in and getting on with the job. When you need to be mobile, it will be in state-of-the-art disaster welfare and support vehicles. You will mostly train and respond to emergencies in your local area, but may travel throughout New Zealand supporting other teams when needed.

Team members train regularly in a variety of skills, including first aid, psychological first aid, and welfare skills, setting up Civil Defence Centres, and Emergency Assistance Centres.". You will be provided regular training opportunities at no cost to you and delivered to best industry practice.

Requirements:

We need you to be physically fit, a good communicator and able to commit to your team for at least 12 months, and be age 16 years or older.
Able to travel away from home during a disaster welfare support operation.
You will need to enjoy great team work and supporting your community.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

Regular fortnightly training in Paraparaumu, plus flexible to commit whatever time is needed during a disaster welfare support operation. There will be 2 intakes of new volunteers a year to enable the volunteers to train together.
