Volunteer Best Practice Guidelines | Te Anga Whaitake - Deep Dive 10 August 2026

Across our previous Best Practice Guidelines sessions, one message came through loud and clear: you wanted to go deeper on three areas in particular. This workshop is our response.

Building directly on the kōrero and feedback from those earlier sessions, we'll spend the day working through:

Recruit and engage volunteers: getting role descriptions and interview questions right, checking fit between expectations and capability, and defining your culture clearly enough to match values with confidence.

Welcome and onboard volunteers: communicating well across a diverse volunteer base, welcoming with arms wide open, and setting expectations in a mana-enhancing way, including tikanga guidance.

Exit volunteers: putting a thoughtful exit and off-boarding process in place, recognising and thanking volunteers well (including poroporoaki), managing succession, and keeping the door open for leavers to stay connected.

We'll be working in a rotating workshop format, three teams, three stations, one per focus area, with each team playing back their kōrero to the wider group. This is a chance to name the gaps and opportunities in your own practice and walk away with concrete changes you can champion back at your organisation, think role descriptions, induction packs, welcome processes, or exit and poroporoaki practice.

This workshop is designed for organisations who already have a working understanding of the Guidelines and are keen to strengthen their practice in these three areas specifically.

We'll provide morning tea and a light lunch, you'll be asked about dietary requirements when you register.

Please note: this session builds on foundational knowledge of the Guidelines. If your organisation is newer to the framework, keep an eye out for our introductory sessions later in the year.

Spaces: up to 30 participants (minimum 9 for the day to go ahead), so get your team in early.

The workshop will be based on the Volunteering New Zealand's 'Best Practice Guidelines (BPG).'
