The Ōtaki Women’s Community Club (OWCC) is a remarkable volunteer-led organization dedicated to enriching the Ōtaki community through service, empowerment, and generosity. Formed over 20 years ago following the disbandment of the Ōtaki Lioness Club, the OWCC has become a cornerstone of local life, supporting a wide range of initiatives that uplift people of all ages.
At the heart of the OWCC’s efforts is the Ōtaki Market—the longest-running market on the Kāpiti Coast, operating since 1996. Held weekly in summer and fortnightly in winter, the market features up to 40 stalls offering crafts, food, produce, and more. All proceeds are reinvested into the community, funding scholarships, youth programs, emergency services, and health and wellbeing initiatives.
One inspiring initiative is the Ōtaki Kids Market, launched by the OWCC to nurture young entrepreneurs aged 5 to 19. This platform allows children to manage their own stalls, selling handmade crafts, baked goods, and more. Over the past two years, more than 600 young people have participated, gaining valuable skills in business and communication. The market's success has been recognized with awards and media attention, highlighting its positive impact on youth development.
Over the years, the OWCC has donated more than $82,000 to causes such as the St John Health Shuttle, Life Flight Helicopter, Cancer Society, Ōtaki Food Bank, and Arohanui Hospice. They also award annual scholarships to Ōtaki College students and support local sports teams and cultural groups.
All funds from the stall fees are donated back into the Ōtaki Community. As well as donations to local organisations such as Fire Service, local sports teams, Surf Lifesaving club and Waka Ama.
Two Ōtaki College students, Rosie and Ethan, were awarded the 2024 Ōtaki Women's Community Club Scholarships in recognition of their outstanding academic mahi.
As well as being able to give back to the community, I’ve found that friendships with other women are some of the most powerful and uplifting connections in my life.
When we support each other, it creates this amazing sense of belonging—like someone’s always got your back. Whether it’s sharing a laugh, offering encouragement, or just being there to listen, those little moments mean everything. I’ve seen how much stronger and more confident we can become when we lift each other up. It reminds me that we’re never alone—and that together, we can handle anything.
