The Kāpiti Art Studio volunteer team creates a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for people in our community who live with a disabilitiy, mental unwellness, and/or neurodivergence. Their role goes far beyond practical support — they empower each person to express themselves creatively and authentically. Grounded in the values of manaakitanga, they offer consistent, wholehearted support and create an environment where people feel seen, heard, and valued.
One standout example of their impact was during the Waikanae Pop-Up Space project — a community initiative that celebrated local creativity and connection. Our volunteers supported participating artists every step of the way, helping them showcase their work in a meaningful, public setting. The project wasn’t just about painting containers — it was about transforming public space into a platform for visibility and pride. Thanks to the volunteers’ support, many of our artists felt a renewed sense of confidence and belonging, knowing their voices were part of something that reached the wider community.
What makes the Kāpiti Art Studio volunteer team truly unique is their unwavering commitment, quiet resilience, and profound empathy. They go beyond just providing assistance — they inspire, mentor, and create a space where people feel heard and valued. Whether it's preparing materials, offering support through creative challenges, listening when someone needs a friendly ear, or celebrating even the smallest milestones, their dedication is evident every week.
Their presence empowers our artists to step outside their comfort zones, grow in confidence, and experience a sense of whanaungatanga — a true feeling of belonging and community. They are the heart and soul of the studio, creating an environment where everyone feels like family. With their warmth, consistency, and genuine care, they make the studio a place of connection and support. Simply put, the studio thrives because of them.
