SeniorNet Kāpiti Volunteers

25 June 2021 | Volunteer Stories

SeniorNet Kāpiti (SNK) was established in 1997 to service the Kāpiti Coast as part of a nationwide programme to assist older New Zealanders to keep up with technology. Membership is available to people aged 50 and over who want to learn about technology or to improve their skills.

SNK is a charitable organisation and our tutors are all unpaid volunteers who enjoy helping others learn about all things computing. They come from diverse backgrounds. Some have a long-term computing background with knowledge, training expertise, and people skills gained during their working lives. Others have gained their skills within SeniorNet and now continue to share their knowledge with others.

Tutors have a shared vision of helping our members get the most out of modern technology and keep up to date with new developments. Most importantly, they understand people's frustrations and have the patience to help with practical, easily understood advice.

Covid-19 demonstrated the importance of digital connectedness in our everyday lives, both in maintaining contact with family and friends and in accessing essential services. While restrictions on personal contact are no longer such a major issue post lock-down, the past twelve months have seen digital access to essential services assume a greater role and, indeed become a necessity in many day-to-day transactions. Interactions with banks, insurance companies, service providers and government departments are increasing conducted online. Online banking is just one of the issues causing concern and anxiety among older New Zealanders.

SNK has recognised this emerging trend and increasingly tailored our courses to meet changing needs, including online banking. We aim to equip our members with the tools and confidence they need for online transactions, be it via computer, tablet or smartphone.

Courses and workshops are conducted in a relaxed friendly environment with time set aside for a cuppa and socialising as well.
SNK course timetables are published on our website www.kapiti.seniornet.nz. The Learning Centre is located at 200 Matai Rd, Raumati Beach. The office phone number is (04) 299 0754 and email address is kapiti@seniornet.nz. New members are always welcome. We will also be holding Open Days at Coastlands Mall on Tuesday 27 July and the Learning Centre on Saturday 31 July for those who wish to learn more about us.

Nominated by Val Jean for the Volunteer Kāpiti volunteer team story competition as part of National Volunteer Week.
